Arriving without the right documents is the fastest way to turn a booked slot into a wasted morning. Absolute Biomedical’s FAQ answers rail medical what to bring in plain terms: original photographic ID, National Insurance evidence, glasses or contacts if you use them, and medication details. This checklist expands that list for medical-only and combined medical + D&A visits.
Photographic identification (originals only)
Absolute Biomedical states you need valid and original proof of identification. Examples listed on the site include:
- Driving licence
- Passport
- National Identity Card
- Industry accredited cards such as Sentinel card, CPCS or CSCS
All photographic identification must be in original form. A picture on your phone or a photocopy will not do. If you have difficulties, contact Absolute Biomedical before booking so alternatives can be discussed — do not discover the problem at reception.
National Insurance evidence
Alongside photo ID, bring National Insurance proof. Absolute Biomedical lists examples such as:
- Original NI card
- P45
- P60
Again, follow your joining instructions if they specify a preferred document.
Glasses, contact lenses and vision checks
Level 1 medicals include vision and colour vision assessment. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them. Sitting a vision test without your usual correction can produce an avoidable unsatisfactory result or referral.
Medication — prescribed and over the counter
If your GP has prescribed medication, bring details (packaging, repeat list, or clear written list of name, dose and timing). If you have recently taken over-the-counter medication, bring those details too so they can be noted during the assessment and/or drug screening.
For D&A collections, Absolute Biomedical is explicit: all prescribed medication must be accurately declared to the collection officer at the time of processing. This protects you during laboratory review and any MRO process.
What else helps on the day
- Your booking confirmation / joining instructions (paper or phone)
- Sponsor or company contact name if they are paying or need results routing
- Enough time — medical portion typically 40–60 minutes
- Ability to provide a urine sample if D&A is booked
- Confirmation of any fasting instruction — some Absolute Biomedical package cards state fasting 10–14 hours; confirm against joining instructions when you book rather than assuming
What not to rely on
- Screenshots of ID
- Expired passports or licences
- Someone else’s recollection of your medication list
- Assuming a construction card alone replaces rail medical standards
Where you are going
Absolute Biomedical Ltd, Ty Cynon, Navigation Park, Abercynon, South Wales CF45 4SN. Lines open Monday to Friday 08:30–17:00 on 01443 303009. Email as on site: [email protected]. On-site employer collections follow the same ID and declaration standards even when the van or clinic room is on your premises.
If you are combining medical and D&A
Bring everything above once. You will complete the medical elements (questionnaire, blood pressure, BMI, mobility, hearing, vision/colour vision, general health) and the urine plus breath alcohol pathway in the same attendance where booked that way. Results still follow different clocks: medical often within 24 hours unless referral; D&A up to ~3 days unless further review.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Sentinel card as photo ID?
Absolute Biomedical lists Sentinel card among industry-accredited photographic ID examples. It must be the original card. If in doubt, bring a passport or driving licence as well.
I lost my NI card — what now?
P45 or P60 are listed as alternatives. Contact Absolute Biomedical before the appointment if you have none of the listed options.
Do I need to bring previous medical certificates?
Not listed as mandatory on the site FAQ, but if your sponsor asked you to bring them, follow the sponsor. Joining instructions win.
Next step
Unsure about rail medical what to bring for your booking type? Call Absolute Biomedical on 01443 303009 before the day — everything you need should also be explained on your joining instructions prior to attendance.
Dress and comfort (practical)
Wear clothes you can move in for mobility checks. Avoid turning up from a dusty site without time to settle if you also need to provide a urine sample — follow collector guidance on the day. If you are fasting as advised on joining instructions, bring any permitted water guidance from those instructions and do not invent your own rules.
If English is not your first language
Ask your sponsor to flag this when booking so Absolute Biomedical can plan clear questionnaire support. Accurate medical history and medication names matter more than perfect grammar.
Family members and companions
Reception space and clinical privacy rules vary; do not assume a companion can sit in the examination. Check when booking if you need support for accessibility reasons.
After you leave
Keep your own note of the appointment date and what was booked (medical, D&A, or both). Ask your sponsor how you will be told when results are uploaded. Absolute Biomedical’s published timescales are a planning guide: medical often within 24 hours unless referral; D&A up to around three days unless further review.
Digital copies after the visit
Some sponsors ask candidates to photograph joining letters for their own records. That is fine for paperwork you were given — it is not a substitute for bringing original photo ID into the appointment. Keep Absolute Biomedical’s contact (01443 303009 / [email protected]) saved in case results routing questions arise through your sponsor.
Special cases
If you have recently changed your name, bring supporting documentation as well as photo ID. If your NI evidence is with a former employer, resolve that before booking rather than hoping reception can waive the requirement. Absolute Biomedical’s site asks you to let them know prior to booking if you have difficulties with ID.
