For the Network Rail Drug and Alcohol Screening, individuals provide a urine sample for analysis. The sample is sent to our RISQS-approved, UKAS-accredited laboratory for testing against a full panel of banned substances.
Results can take up to 3 days, longer if further investigation is required. Positive samples lead to a 5-year suspension noted on your Sentinel profile. During the consultation you'll complete a medical questionnaire and undertake a medical examination. This assesses general health, body mass index, visual acuity, colour perception, visual field, mobility, coordination and hearing. Results are combined to give a fitness-for-work indication, and are uploaded within 24 hours unless a referral is needed.
The medical is conducted by a competent, approved occupational health examiner as part of a Level 1 medical screening:
If a candidate doesn't meet a satisfactory level, the examiner may refer them to their GP with guidance, or to an Occupational Health Physician for specialist consultation (additional charges may apply).

Supporting health and wellbeing in the workplace leads to measurable gains in condition and performance, helping individuals overcome challenges and driving business success efficiently and effectively.
Our services are tailored with the employer to assess whether an individual can safely perform their operational activities. Key features include:
An ongoing system of health checks, often required by law for employees exposed to noise, vibration, radiation, solvents, fumes, dusts or other hazardous substances.
We help with risk assessments to identify roles that need surveillance. A proactive regime highlights where more control is needed — blanket coverage for all staff is best avoided, as it can mislead and waste money.
Health surveillance is a specific legal requirement and shouldn't be confused with general wellbeing checks or fitness-to-work examinations that aren't directly linked to a workplace risk.

New starters to the rail industry must complete an approved medical and drug test before they can begin work.

A single, straightforward screening for staff who only need one type of assessment completed.
